San Simeon Cove :: March 20, 2004 @ 6am PST

In 1852 a whaling village was established at San Simeon cove. The name San Simeon is derived from the Spanish San Simon; a patron saint and was first recorded in 1819 as the name of a rancho of Mission San Miguel which is located approximately fifty miles East as the crow flies.

This location became the staging area for William Randolph Hearst as he began building his massive castle, a project that would span twenty years. Today the old wharfs are gone; washed away by the temper of the sea. Still remaining are the adobe homes that housed those in charge of operations, the old school house where the children of the workers were educated and a large warehouse used to store the treasured antiques that had been collected from all over the world while they awaited their resting place at Hearst Castle. The pier you see today was built by the county of San Luis Obispo and is used primarily for the fishing pleasure of locals and visitors alike.

San Simeon Cove is the go-to beach for the communities of Cambria & San Simeon.
